Sebastian, King of Portugal. Sebastian ( Portuguese: Sebastião I [1] [sɨβɐʃˈti.ɐ̃w]; 20 January 1554 – 4 August 1578) was King of Portugal from 11 June 1557 to 4 August 1578 and the penultimate Portuguese monarch of the House of Aviz . He was the son of João Manuel, Prince of Portugal, and his wife, Joanna of Austria.
John, Prince of Portugal (1537-54) was the only surviving son of King John III and Queen Catherine of Portugal. He married Joanna of Austria, sister of Philip II of Spain, in December 1552. From 1539, the heir to the throne was João Manuel, Prince of Portugal, who married Joanna of Austria, Princess of Portugal, daughter of Charles V. The sole son of John III to survive childhood, Prince John, was sick and died at young age (of juvenile diabetes ), eighteen days before his wife gave birth to Prince Sebastian on 20 January 1554.

Manuel of Portugal (c. 1568–22 June 1638) was the illegitimate son of António, Prior of Crato, pretender to the Portuguese throne during the 1580 Portuguese succession crisis. He secretly married in 1597 Countess Emilia of Nassau, daughter of William the Silent and Anna of Saxony.
