Gregory and Elizabeth must have feared for their own lives, and Elizabeth wrote a letter to the king affirming their loyalty.

Unfortunately his wife and two of their children died in an epidemic in 1528. Cromwell also had an illegitimate daughter called Jane.

No one is quite sure what caused the sweating sickness, but it was highly contagious and often deadly.
