He therefore died at the end of October as 2 nd duke of Somerset, and William Seymour succeeded as 3 rd duke. At the death of the old duke, the new duke’s mother appealed to the king in an attempt to know why his grandmother retained custody of her son, or ‘permit her to recover his guardianship by law’.
William Seymour, 2nd Duke of Somerset, Marquess of Hertford, was born 1 September 1587 to Edward Seymour, Lord Beauchamp (1561-1612) and Honora Rogers (-1608) and died November 1660 of unspecified causes.

William Seymour, 3rd Duke of Somerset (17 April 1652 – 12 December 1671) was the son of Henry Seymour, Lord Beauchamp, and Mary Capell. As both his father and two elder uncles had predeceased him, he succeeded to the dukedom on the death of his grandfather William Seymour .
