Herbert [née Sidney], Mary, countess of Pembroke (1561–1621), writer and literary patron, was born on 27 October 1561 at Tickenhall, near Bewdley, Worcestershire, the third daughter of Sir Henry Sidney (1529–1586) and Lady Mary Sidney (1530x35–1586), who was the daughter of John Dudley, duke of Northumberland, and his wife, Jane Dudley [see under Dudley, John].
