Charles Eugene, Duke of Württemberg died on 24 October 1793. He had ruled for 56 years and as he had no legitimate offspring, the duchy passed to his brothers, Louis Eugene in 1793, then two years later to Frederick II Eugene, who was Frederick William's grandfather.
Duke Louis of Württemberg. Duke Ludwig Friedrich Alexander of Württemberg (German: Ludwig Friedrich Alexander Herzog von Württemberg; 30 August 1756, in Treptow an der Rega – 20 September 1817, in Kirchheim unter Teck) was the second son of Frederick II Eugene, Duke of Württemberg (1732–1797) and Margravine Sophia Dorothea of Brandenburg-Schwedt (1736–1798).
Württemberg was born in Puławy to Duke Louis of Württemberg (1756–1817) and Princess Maria Anna Czartoryska (1768–1854). After his parents divorced in 1793 he was raised by his father and, as a nephew of the Russian Empress consort Maria Feodorovna , he was one of the playfellows of the later Tsar Nicholas I of Russia and soon joined the Tsarist Russian Army. In 1489 his right of succession, previously over the whole of Württemberg, was even limited by Eberhard V to Württemberg-Stuttgart only. However, after the death of Eberhard, who had assumed the title of Duke Eberhard I in 1495, he achieved sovereignty over the whole of rule in all of Württemberg as Duke Eberhard II.

Duke Ludwig Friedrich Alexander of Württemberg was the second son of Frederick II Eugene, Duke of Württemberg and Margravine Sophia Dorothea of Brandenburg-Schwedt . His elder brother was Frederick I, the first King of Württemberg, and his sister was the Russian Empress consort, Maria Feodorovna. Louis retained the pre-royal title of Duke.
