VAN DYKE Né en 1889 à San Diego (Californie) d'un avocat et d'une pianiste de concert devenue comédienne, Woodbridge "Woody" Strong Van Dyke II exerce divers métiers comme chercheur d'or ou bûcheron avant de devenir assistant et interprète de D.W.Griffith sur le tournage de « Intolérance » en 1915.
Van Dyke began his career as an assistant director, notably under D.W. Griffith on "Intolerance" (1916). He took over the direction of "White Shadows of the South Seas" from Robert Flaherty in 1928 and, by the 1930s, had developed into one of MGM's most reliable directors.
