En 1976, il part en Californie après un passage en Espagne et s’associe avec Jackson Browne, qui produit son premier véritable album : Warren Zevon. Plusieurs morceaux sont repris par The Eagles et Linda Ronstadt. Le premier succès commercial de Zevon est Excitable Boy en 1978.

But he really got comfortable with his idiosyncratic style on his third album, creating a loose, rocking sound that juxtaposes beautifully with his dark sense of humor.
Warren Zevon, came out with his first LP EXCITABLE BOY back in 1976 or there abouts and he took the North American music world by storm. Every track on this LP was a bombshell as were his concerts of the time. Warren made a point of being GREAT in everything he did and his song stylings were always over the top.
