Leben. James Hamilton war der ältere Sohn des James Hamilton, 3. Duke of Abercorn und dessen Gemahlin Rosalind Bingham. His paternal grandfather was James Hamilton, 2nd Earl of Arran in Scotland and Duke of Châtellerault in France. His father's family descended from Walter FitzGilbert, the founder of the House of Hamilton, who had received the barony of Cadzow from Robert the Bruce. James's mother was a daughter of George Seton, 7th Lord Seton.
John Hamilton, 1st Marquess of Abercorn (1756–1818), only son of Capt John, himself second son of the 7th Earl. James Hamilton, Viscount Hamilton (1786–1814), elder son of the 1st Marquess, predeceased his father. James Hamilton, 2nd Marquess of Abercorn (1811–1885) was created Duke of Abercorn in 1868.
James Edward Hamilton, 4th Duke of Abercorn (29 February 1904 – 4 June 1979) styled Viscount Strabane until 1913 and Marquess of Hamilton between 1913 and 1953, was a British peer. He was the son of James Hamilton, 3rd Duke of Abercorn, and Lady Rosalind Cecilia Caroline Bingham. He inherited his father's peerages on 12 September 1953.
