He was the son of Friedrich I Kurfürst von Brandenburg and Elisabeth Prinzessin von Bayern-Landshut. (1) He married Katherine von Sachsen, daughter of Friedrich I Kurfürst von Sachsen and Catherine von Braunschweig-Lüneburg, on 11 June 1441.
