Prince Albert was the second son of Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and Princess Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. In 1840 he married Queen Victoria.At this time the United Kingdom was the pre-eminent world power and a country at the cutting edge of technical and social change in the nineteenth century.
Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (26 August 1819 – 14 December 1861), who married Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom on 10 February 1840. They had nine children. The marriage was unhappy because both husband and wife were promiscuous .

Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was only 42 and apparently had not been ill for long. Since his marriage to Queen Victoria in 1840, he had become the mainstay of his wife and family and a respected and imaginative adviser to Government, although the people had mistrusted him as a foreigner and never really warmed to him.

Up till the age of 10, Albert suffered repeated attacks of croup brought on by the slightest cold.
