Alexander Duff, 1st Duke of Fife, was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on November 10, 1849. He was the only son of James Duff, 5th Earl Fife and Lady Agnes Hay, daughter of William Hay, 18th Earl of Erroll and Lady Elizabeth FitzClarence who was an illegitimate daughter of King William IV and his mistress Dorothea Jordan.

Il est le fils d' Alexander Duff (1777-1851), frère cadet de James Duff (4e comte Fife), et d'Anne Stein, la fille de James Stein de Kilbagie. Il est député de Banffshire de 1837 à 1857; son frère, George Skene Duff, est député d'Elgin Burghs. Il est créé baron Skene, de Skene, dans la pairie du Royaume-Uni, en 1857 à part entière.

George Skene Duff (1816–1889), an MP for Elgin Burghs. He died at Percy Cross, Walham Green, Fulham, Middlesex in March 1851.
