Lord Francis was born in Dublin and was the elder brother of Henry Conyngham, Earl of Mount Charles and Albert Denison, 1st Baron Londesborough. He was educated at Eton. Between 1816 and 1824 he was known as Lord Francis Conyngham after his father was created Marquess Conyngham; he was given the courtesy title of Earl of Mount Charles in 1824 on the early death of his unmarried elder brother.
