Simpson served as an officer in the Coldstream Guards before becoming a shipbroker in the family firm of SSY.

Simpson Spence & Young opened a second office in Newcastle upon Tyne in England. Simpson son Ernest Aldrich Simpson (1897-1958) joined the company.
