Henry FitzRoy, hijo de Barbara Villiers, condesa de Castlemaine, en 1663, era hijo ilegítimo del rey Carlos II de Inglaterra, el segundo de Barbara Villiers. Su madre era hija de William Villiers, segundo vizconde de Grandison, coronel de uno de los regimientos del rey Carlos I que murió en combate durante la Guerra Civil.
