Dmitry Levitsky’s Smolny Girls were portraits of the Imperial Educational Society for Noble Girls (Smolny Institute).Founded on the initiative of Ivan Betskoi by Catherine the Great in 1764, the institute was housed at the Smolny Novodevichy Convent of the Resurrection in St Petersburg.
Initially, the Educational Society of Noble Maidens was located at the Smolny Resurrection Monastery, but due to the inconvenience of the buildings, it became necessary to build a new building. Only half a century later, the construction of the Smolny Institute building began, which was completed in 1808.

A scholarly article by Alexander Liarsky presents the history of the Institute, followed by over 50 photographs of the Smolny from Kovaleff Baker’s extremely rare album, accompanied by Liarsky’s informative commentary drawing on primary sources.
