  1. James Hamilton, 2nd Marquess of Hamilton and 4th Earl of Arran KG PC (1589 – 2 March 1625), styled Lord Aven from 1599 to 1604, was a Scottish politician. He was the son of John Hamilton, 1st Marquess of Hamilton and Margaret Lyon .

His date of birth is unknown, however sometime after 24 August 1531 he married Janet Home, the only daughter and heiress of Alexander, 3rd Lord Home, and by right of his wife he received the estate of Samuelston in East Lothian. There were at least five children from this marriage:

  3. James Hamilton, earl of Arran, wrote his will on 26 March 1529, making his eldest natural son, Sir James Hamilton of Finnart, his executor and the tutor for his heir (who was still a minor). He died shortly thereafter, certainly by 31 March when Finnart was granted wardship of the earldom, and was buried at the collegiate church at Hamilton in Lanarkshire.

  6. James was born on 12 August 1575, probably at Paisley, Scotland, the eldest son of Claud Hamilton and his wife Margaret Seton.At that time his father was only a younger brother of James Hamilton, 3rd Earl of Arran, but he would on 24 July 1587 be created Lord Paisley.
