Crimes at the Dark House opens with a murder. In the gold territories of Australia, Tod Slaughter's character sneaks into a tent and kills its occupant by driving a tent peg through his head. Going through the man's papers, he discovers that the dead man is Sir Henry Glyde and has just been called home upon the death of his wealthy father.

27 de mar. de 2024 · Yes, it may be a short, 1940s Victorian melodrama (based on Wilkie Collins’ The Woman In White, no less) with all the subtlety of a tent peg in the ear. But it’s also an opportunity for its star to absolutely own every scene he’s in, in all his moustache-twiddling, throat-crushing, over-reacting-to-the-slightest-provocation glory.
Full Dark House is the first in a series of novels featuring Arthur Bryant and John May, partners in the London Police Department’s Peculiar Crimes Unit. This is perhaps one of the most unusual series to be introduced this year, considering that Bryant is killed at the beginning of Full Dark House and we only come to know him in retrospect.
Crimes At The Dark House is a spectacular gem. Despite its age it is genuinely horrible, with a “can’t take your eyes off him” turn from its star, a witty script (“You always said you were a teetotaller… now you’re going to have a nice drop!”) and a galloping, not-a-shot-wasted pace.
