He studied in Hamburg (1714–17), and then was engaged as a tenor at the Opera there (1718); he was a member of the Braunschweig Opera (1719–21), where he sang in the premiere of his opera Antioco (Aug. 11, 1721).

Johann Adolf was the youngest son of Frederick II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and Magdalene Augusta of Anhalt-Zerbst. The prince was educated by Gottfried Christoph Sommer in Gotha and between 1735 and 1739 in Geneva. [1] He joined the Danish military service in 1739.
Adolphus Augustus (born 29 March 1680; died 29 June 1704), married Elisabeth Sophia of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Nordborg (1683-1767). She was the daughter of Rudolf of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Norburg, and granddaughter of Frederick, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Norburg. their son, Leopold Augustus (1702-1706), died as a child.
