In this section. Herbert Baker was appointed architect to the Bank of England in 1921. Despite having never built a bank, nor being familiar with the City of London, Baker was selected by the Rebuilding Committee on the basis of his reputation and merit, unlike many of his predecessors who had had prior connections to the Bank.
On arrival in Cape Town he was met by Herbert Baker, who by that date had been working in South Africa for 19 years, a period spanning the pre-Anglo-Boer War days into the challenging years of post-war reorganisation and Union. What is reputed to be Baker’s first house in South Africa was for James Rose-Innes, Minister of Justice, in 1893.

8 de feb. de 2023 · Baker was born in his family home in Owletts in Kent, a house dating back to 1684, which his family acquired in 1796. He died there in 1946 at the age of 84, and it is still occupied by the Baker family. To me there is always something satisfying and fulfilling about being born and dying at a good age in the same home. It's a circle completed.
