History. 2014 marked the school's centenary with an extensive program of activities which united current students, alumni, staff, and the wider community in a celebration of 100 years of excellence in public education. Opened in 1914 with an enrolment of 194 girls, the school quickly gained the status of a 'first-class high school'.
The “Girls’ High School” was established under The Public Instruction Act of 1880 in recognition of the need to provide a course of instruction for the completion of the Public School Curriculum and the preparation of students for the University of Sydney. Prior to this, there was no provision for females to enter university.
On average, only 1/3 of applicants are accepted into a selective school. Only a smaller fraction are accepted into North Sydney Girls High School. After Year 7, North Sydney Girls also accepts a small number of students transferring from other schools in Years 8-11. There is a maximum enrolment of 150 students per grade, from years 7 – 10.
