Bert Lahr, the comic actor whose flexibility enabled him to star as the Cowardly Lion in "The Wizard of Oz" and as a hobo in "Waiting for Godot," died yesterday at the age of 72.
Lahr soon returned to theater, co-starring in the U.S. premiere of Waiting for Godot in 1956 at the Coconut Grove Playhouse in Miami, Florida. According to John Lahr, Bert’s son, the performance was a flop largely because of the director’s choices, including the decision to limit Lahr’s movements on stage.
