Sir James Hamilton of Finnart was a Scottish nobleman, the illegitimate son of James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Arran by Mary Boyd of Bonshaw. Although legitimated in 1512, while still a minor, he continued to be known as the Bastard of Arran.
When Lady Grissell Hamilton was born in 1531, in Haddington, Haddingtonshire, Scotland, her father, Sir James Hamilton of Finnart, was 36 and her mother, Margaret Livingston, was 21. She married Sir Andrew Leslie 5th Earl of Rothes in 1548, in Scotland. They were the parents of at least 6 sons and 5 daughters.

1 de ene. de 1993 · His hold on the town was confirmed in December 1535, when he was granted the lands of Kincavil - the patrimony of his cousin, James Hamilton, who had been cursed (i.e. excommunicated) and banished for heresy five months before at (so say the Protestant historians) Finnart's own instigation.
James Hamilton, his father's eldest son, v/as knighted and had been granted the lands of Finnart, near Greenock in Renfrewshire, by 1513. He was almost immediately immersed in the political convulsions following the death of James IV at Flodden in 1513 and the arrival of the Regent Albany in 1515.
