Hitler orders a violent purge of the top leadership of the Nazi Party paramilitary formation, the SA (Sturmabteilungen; Assault Detachments). Pressured by German army commanders, whose support he would need to become President, Hitler directs the SS to murder SA Chief of Staff Ernst Röhm and his top commanders.
Röhm and his chief lieutenants were seized on the weekend of June 30, 1934, and executed without trial. The opportunity was also taken to settle other accounts on this “Night of the Long Knives”—among those murdered were Schleicher and the former Nazi leader Gregor Strasser. A month later, on August 2, Hindenburg died.
