Ernst Röhm war das dritte Kind des Eisenbahn-Oberinspekteurs Julius Röhm und seiner Ehefrau Emilie. 1906 legte er in München das Abitur ab und trat als Fahnenjunker in die Bayerische Armee ein. Im Ersten Weltkrieg wurde Röhm zunächst an der Westfront eingesetzt, wo er mehrfach verwundet wurde.
