He received his early education from his uncle, the first Episcopal bishop of Ohio and later of Illinois, and his legal training from U.S. attorney general William Wirt. He was appointed secretary of the Treasury by President Lincoln, who later made him chief justice of the Supreme Court. Salmon P. Chase was born at Cornish, N.H., on Jan. 13, 1808.
