Sequoyah was born to Virginia fur trader Nathanial Gist* and Wu-te-he, the daughter of a Cherokee Chief, sometime in about 1770 near the old Cherokee capital of Echota in Tuskegee (Tasgigi), now flooded by Tellico Lake.
