Grimston is the son of John Grimston, 6th Earl of Verulam. He succeeded in the earldom in 1973 on the death of his father. Until 1996, when he retired at the age of 44, he was a director of corporate finance at the merchant bank ING Barings, which had become insolvent the previous year following unauthorised trading by its head derivatives trader in Singapore.
