Kasturba Kapadia was born on April 11 1869 in Porbandar, in present day Gujarat. She was the daughter of Gokuldas Makanji Kapadia, a wealthy merchant. Kasturba had two brothers, one younger and one older than her. Her father was a friend of Karamchand Gandhi, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi’s father.
History has often presented Kasturba Gandhi as the subsidiary shadow of her husband, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. While the ‘Father of the Nation’ is revered for being on the front-lines of the freedom struggle, Kasturba has left an unforgettable mark on Indian history with her significant, although under-recognised contributions, to the struggle for independence.

Baggrund. Mahatma Gandhi blev født i en købmandskaste med fromme hinduer og nonner. Han blev opdraget som vegetarianer og giftede sig 13 år gammel med Kasturba (omtales også som Kasturbai eller bare Ba), som han fik fire børn med. I 1888 forlod Gandhi sin familie og rejste til England for at studere retsvidenskab.
