This group of letters are love letters written to Lady Dorothy Savile in the most verbose and ardent manner by Scroop Egerton, then 4th Earl of Bridgewater, in his attempt to persuade Lady Dorothy to accept his marriage proposal [which she did not, going on to marry the 3rd Earl of Burlington].
Scroop Egerton, 1st Duke of Bridgewater, was born 11 August 1681 to John Egerton, 3rd Earl of Bridgewater (1646-1701) and Jane Paulet (c1655-1716) and died 11 January 1745 of unspecified causes.
Sutherland was the eldest son of Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Marquess of Stafford, by his second wife, Lady Louisa, daughter of Scroop Egerton, 1st Duke of Bridgwater. Granville Leveson-Gower, 1st Earl Granville, was his half-brother. He was educated at Westminster and at Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated MA in 1777. [3]

Scroop Egerton, 1st Duke of Bridgewater (11 August 1681 – 11 January 1744), styled as Viscount Brackley from 1687 to 1701 and as the Earl of Bridgewater from 1701 to 1720, was an English peer, courtier and landowner.
