Stewart was the son of John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Atholl and Grizel Rattray. He supported the government of the queen dowager Mary of Guise . He wrote to her on 10 June 1554 describing a skirmish in which his cousin George Drummond of Ledcrieff was killed by the lairds of Ardblair , Drumlochie, and Gormok, his followers.
James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray (c. 1531 – 23 January 1570) was a member of the House of Stewart as the illegitimate son of King James V of Scotland. At times a supporter of his half-sister Mary, Queen of Scots , he was the regent of Scotland for his half-nephew, the infant King James VI , from 1567 until his assassination in 1570.

Marie Stewart remained a friend of another lady in waiting Elizabeth Schaw, and her husband John Murray, later Earl of Annandale, who were courtiers in London. Schaw took long leave from the queen's household in August 1613 and came to Scotland and stayed with Marie at Alloa and Stirling .
