The Compton family was quite extraordinary in their service to the Crown -- how William ended up as a Colonel of the Horse for the Parliamentarians, I don't know -- unless he was playing both sides at the same time, or spying for Charles II. Earl Compton, the son of the 7th Marquess, now lives on the Castle Ashby Estate whilst the Marquess himself continues the family tradition of managing the Castle Ashby and Compton Wynyates Estates. In 1512 William Compton purchased Castle Ashby from Sir John Hussey who, six years previously, had bought the Estate from Richard, 3rd Earl of Kent.

Northampton was the son of William Compton, 1st Earl of Northampton, and his wife Elizabeth, daughter and heir of Sir John Spencer, Lord Mayor of London. He was created a Knight of the Bath on 3 November 1616. In 1621 he was elected Member of Parliament for Ludlow.
