He constructed the present bridge over the Tay and that crossing the Firth of Forth. He was made a knight in 1890 and was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Englneers. Sir William was born in 1839.

  3. william arrol, born 1839 Builder of the Forth Bridge. The son of a spinner, Sir William Arrol was born in Houston, Renfrewshire, and started work in a cotton mill at only 9 years of age. He started training as a blacksmith by age 13, and went on to learn mechanics and hydraulics at night school.

  4. William Arrol was responsible for some of the most important bridges of his day. In particular, he worked on the Forth Bridge and the new Tay bridge, which replaced the original railway bridge that collapsed in the storm of December 1879 .

The exhibition was co-curated by the Friends of Seafield House (FoSH) and South Ayrshire Museum & Galleries and it is now open and can be viewed at Rozelle House in Ayr until 16 April 2023.
