One of Scotland’s most senior noblemen, the Duke of Hamilton, has died. Angus Alan Douglas-Hamilton, who suffered from dementia, died on Saturday at the age of 71.
Angus Alan Douglas Douglas-Hamilton, 15th Duke of Hamilton and 12th Duke of Brandon (13 September 1938 – 5 June 2010), styled Earl of Angus until 1940 and Marquess of Douglas and Clydesdale between 1940 and 1973, was the premier peer of Scotland.

Douglas-Hamilton was the 14th Duke of Hamilton, born in London in 1903. He developed interests in flying during the early 1920s, becoming a Squadron Commander in the Auxiliary Air Force (1927-36). As an aside, he was involved in the flight of Rudolf Hess during World War II.
Angus Alan Douglas Douglas- Hamilton was born Earl of Angus, later Marquis of Douglas and Clydesdale, eldest son to Douglas, the 14th Duke of Hamilton and to Lady Elizabeth Ivy Percy, eldest daughter of the Duke of Northumberland. The young Angus was educated at Eton and Balliol College Oxford, where his interest in engineering was evident.
