Prince Luitpold was even accused by some people to be the murderer of his nephew, but soon the decent and affable prince became one of Bavaria's most popular rulers. One of his first actions (on 1 August 1886) was to open several of the palaces of Ludwig II to the public.
The “reigning Prince” Luitpold then continued in office even after Ludwig's tragic death, because Ludwig's younger brother, King Otto I of Bavaria, was also deemed unfit to govern. Even today, the era of the Prince Regent's reign is considered as “the good old days” in Bavaria.

Prince Luitpold was born at Schloß Leutstetten near Starnberg, in Bavaria. He is the only surviving child of Prince Ludwig of Bavaria (1913–2008) and his wife Princess Irmingard of Bavaria (1923–2010). Marriage. On 25 June 1979 Prince Luitpold married Katrin Beatrix Wiegand, the daughter of Gerd Wiegand and his wife Ellen Schumacher.
