In 1078 he invaded South Wales and killed its king (Rhys ab Owain) at Goodwick. The general threat to old established interests eventually brought Gruffudd and Rhys ap Tewdwr into alliance, and together they imposed a crushing defeat on their opponent at the well-known battle of Mynydd Carn, fought in 1081, and in which Trahaearn met his end.

After Rhys ap Tewdwr was killed in battle near Brecon in 1093 his Norman enemies swept into West Wales, establishing their own lordships there: his heir, Gruffudd ap Rhys was then just a child. But when he came to manhood he began to campaign to recover Deheubarth, often allying himself with his father-in-law, Gruffudd ap Cynan, ruler of Gwynedd.
Roedd Rhys ap Tewdwr (cyn 1065 - 1093) yn frenin teyrnas Deheubarth ac yn aelod o deulu Dinefwr. Un o'i hynafiaid oedd y Brenin Rhodri Fawr . Fe'i ganed yn yr hyn a elwir heddiw yn Sir Gaerfyrddin a bu farw ym Mrwydr Aberhonddu yn Ebrill 1093.
