Thomas Gainsborough, (baptized May 14, 1727, Sudbury, Eng.—died Aug. 2, 1788, London), British painter. At 13 he left his native Suffolk to study in London. By c. 1750, back in Suffolk, he had established a reputation in portraiture and landscape painting. He painted landscapes for pleasure; portraiture was his profession.
