The culmination of Thomas' development as a Christian pac ifist occurred when he joined the Fellowship of Reconciliation in January, 1917. The Fellowship, founded in Britain in 1914 and or ganized in the United States during the following year, was com posed of Christians who believed that Jesus' teachings required.

Thomas was born in Marion, Ohio, on Nov. 20, 1884. He was graduated from Union Theological Seminary in New York City in 1911 and became a Presbyterian clergyman. At his East Harlem Church and in the American Parish settlement house, the problems of poverty led him to support the social gospel that was then popular.
Norman Mattoon Thomas (1884-1968), a native of Marion, Ohio, received his B.A. (1905) from Princeton University and his B.D. (1911) from Union Theological Seminary. A former Presbyterian minister (1911-1918), he joined the Fellowship of Reconciliation in 1917, founding and editing the organization’s magazine, The World Tomorrow , from 1918 to 1921.
