Pre-revolutionary career. Dumouriez was born at Cambrai on 25 January 1739, the son of a military officer and minor nobleman, Anthoine-François Dumouriez. His early education was at home, but he spent three years studying classics at the college of Louis-le-Grand, before entering the army in 1757, aged eighteen.
