Dr. Woodman’s Qabalistic interests were shared by two individuals who were to join the S.R.I.A.: Dr.William Wynn Westcott , who became a member in 1880, and Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers , who joined in 1882. Woodman, twenty years Westcott’s senior, was undoubtedly looked upon with respect by his two junior Fratres.
Samuel Liddell "MacGregor" Mathers (1854-1918) was a founder of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, to which Aleister Crowley, a former pupil of his, later belonged. Mathers' translation of The Qabbalah Unveiled from the Latin Kabbala Dunatta was highly influential, as it was the most accessible English translation.

His father died while he was a young boy, and his mother died while he was in his thirties. Shortly after his mother's death, he moved from Dorset to London.
