Thomas Merton fue un monje trapense, teólogo, escritor, místico, activista y especialista en religión comparada estadounidense. En 1949 fue ordenado sacerdote, recibiendo el nombre de «Padre Louis». Era miembro de la Abadía de Nuestra Señora de Getsemaní cerca de Bardstown, Kentucky, en donde vivió desde 1941 hasta su muerte.
