Fra 1784 og frem til Christian 7.'s død i 1808 var det hans søn kronprins Frederik, den senere Frederik 6., som var det uofficielle, men i realiteten fungerende kongelige overhoved. Nominelt var Christian 7. enevældig konge, reelt var han en politisk fange uden loyale støtter i hoffets inderkreds.

Hereditary Prince Ferdinand. v. t. e. Juliane Sophie (18 February 1788, in Copenhagen – 9 May 1850, in Copenhagen) was a Princess of Denmark, the daughter of Frederick, Hereditary Prince of Denmark, who himself was a younger son of King Frederick V of Denmark in his second marriage to queen Juliana Maria of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel .
Today it is part of the Royal Danish Collection and can be seen in room 16 at Rosenborg. The painting was purchased by Rosenborg in 2015 with support from Augustinus Fonden, Ny Carlsbergfondet, and the Danish Ministry of Culture. Caroline Mathilde became the Queen of Denmark in 1766, when she married Christian VII.
Christian VII (29 January 1749 – 13 March 1808) was King of Denmark and Norway and Duke of Schleswig and Holstein from 1766 until his death in 1808.
