During the November Revolution, Grand Duke Ernest Louis was removed from power on 9 November 1918 by the Darmstadt Workers' and Soldiers' Council. In 1919, the Grand Duke released the officials of Hesse from their oaths of service to him, but he never issued an explicit abdication.

Grand Duchess of Hesse Royal Monogram of Princess Eleonore. Eleonore married Ernest Louis, Grand Duke of Hesse in Darmstadt on 2 February 1905. By marriage, she became Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine. As Grand Duchess, she took over the sponsor- and leadership of a number of charity organizations previously managed by her mother-in-law.
Ernest Louis was inconsolable and wished to die with his brother. He also witnessed the death of his mother from diphtheria in 1878, when he was ten years old. His father remarried in 1884 to Alexandrine de Luynes, a French countess. Ernest Louis succeeded his father as Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine in 1892.
