Magdalene Augusta of Anhalt-Zerbst. Johann August of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (17 February 1704 – 8 May 1767), was a German prince, member of the House of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg . He was born in Gotha, the fifth but second surviving son of Frederick II, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg and Magdalene Augusta of Anhalt-Zerbst .
Frederick I, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. When Ernst inherited the duchy of Saxe-Altenburg (1672), he made Frederick the regent of that duchy. In 1674 Ernst, who was already ill, made Frederick the regent of his entire lands. After the death of his father (1675) Frederick assumed the throne of both duchies.
She was the daughter of Frederick I, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (1646–1691) and Magdalena Sibylle, Duchess of Saxe-Weissenfels (1648–1680). Ernst II (31 August 1871 in Altenburg – 22 March 1955 in Trockenborn-Wolfersdorf) was the last reigning duke of Saxe-Altenburg and a German general active during World War I. Early life [ edit ] He was the fourth child and only son of Prince Moritz , the youngest son of Georg, Duke of Saxe-Altenburg and Princess Augusta of Saxe-Meiningen .
Their eldest son Frederick was the first to inherit this title. His granddaughter from this son, Anna Sophie of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, was a direct matrilineal ancestor of Nicholas II of Russia.
