27 de sept. de 2017 · Every student of nineteenth-century Russia is familiar with the name of Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna. Not only was she the aunt by marriage of Tsar Alexander II (and, indeed, the sister-in-law of Tsar Alexander I and Tsar Nicholas I), she was also a central figure in the complex series of political and bureaucratic manœuvres that led up to the emancipation of the serfs in 1861.
16 de jun. de 2020 · Nicholas died in Athens on 8 February 1938 after suffering a heart attack. He said, “I am happy to die in my motherland, in my beloved country.” 1 Elena moved into a villa in Athens from where she supported charities and the Russian community. Elena stayed in Greece during the Second World War, much to the worry of her family.

Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna suggested Princess Marina as a likely bride to the Duke of Montpensier, son of the Count of Paris. During World War I, Marina served as a nurse with Caucasian troops near Trabzon. She escaped the Russian Revolution with the rest of her family aboard the British ship HMS Marlborough in 1919.
