Not only was she the aunt by marriage of Tsar Alexander II (and, indeed, the sister-in-law of Tsar Alexander I and Tsar Nicholas I), she was also a central figure in the complex series of political and bureaucratic manœuvres that led up to the emancipation of the serfs in 1861.

During World War I, Marina served as a nurse with Caucasian troops near Trabzon. She escaped the Russian Revolution with the rest of her family aboard the British ship HMS Marlborough in 1919.
