A committed and daring method actor, Hoffman got his start with a breakout role in The Graduate but quickly shed his clean-cut persona in Midnight Cowboy and went on to star in dark and gritty features throughout the New Hollywood era.
In 1999, Hoffman produced his first feature, the Vietnam-era family portrait "A Walk on the Moon" (1999), and was honored by the American Film Institute in "A Tribute to Dustin Hoffman," a televised ceremony during which he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award.What should have been a career highlight was followed by several years of doubt and anxiety over his work.
