Synopsis by Hal Erickson. This Western classic stars Gary Cooper as Hadleyville marshal Will Kane, about to retire from office and go on his honeymoon with his new Quaker bride, Amy (Grace Kelly). But his happiness is short-lived when he is informed that the Miller gang, whose leader (Ian McDonald) Will had arrested, is due on the 12:00 train.
Imagine the suspenseful opening scene from Once Upon a Time in West, but as an entire movie. Fred Zinnemann's High Noon is a classic & revolutionary movie of the Western genre. Tense, suspenseful & solid drama, which is an allegory for McCarthyism and the Hollywood Black List. Gary Cooper renders one of his best performances on the screen.
Yeah, I actually think this was a pretty brave movie to make considering the circumstances. If you’re interested there’s a great book about the movie called High Noon: The Hollywood Blacklist and the Making of an American Classic by Glenn Frankel that covers all of the background of the film (Frankel also wrote a good book on the real inspiration for John Ford’s The Searchers.)
