In 1803, the United States paid approximately $15 million dollars to France for more than 800,000 square miles of land. This land deal was arguably the greatest achievement of Thomas Jefferson's presidency, but it also posed a major philosophical problem for Jefferson.

Thomas Jefferson was born near the Blue Ridge Mountains of the British-ruled colony of Virginia on April 13, 1743. From the age of nine, Jefferson studied away from home and lived with his tutor. His father—a landowner, surveyor, and government official—died when his son was 14.
Biography. Thomas Jefferson was born in the British colony of Virginia to an influential planter. After studying the liberal arts at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, he entered a law office and then the Virginia House of Burgesses, distinguishing himself through his written eloquence.
