The Killing Fields (1984) was based on the true story of an American journalist and his friendship with a Cambodian, Dith Pran, who was sent to the killing fields but, after some terrible experiences, eventually escaped. The actor who played Dith Pran, Haing S. Ngor, had also escaped from Cambodia.
