Das Land Thüringen, im Jahre 1920 aus sieben kleineren Staaten geschaffen, nahm in jenem Jahr eine weiß-rote Bikolore als Flagge an. The Country Thuringia, created in the year 1920 out of seven smaller states, adoped in that year a white-red Bicolor as flag. The flag of Thuringia was introduced in 1920, with its formation out of the fragmented Thuringian states (the Duchy of Thuringia had been absorbed into Saxony in 1400), as the reverse of the flag of Hesse. The civil flag of Hesse resembles that of Monaco's and, particularly, Indonesia's. It also resembles one of the flags of Alsace.
The eight stars around it represent the eight former states which formed Thuringia. The flag of Thuringia is a white-red bicolor, derived from the white and red stripes of the Ludowingian lion. The coat of arms and flag of Hesse are quite similar to the Thuringian ones, since they are also derived from the Ludowingian symbols.
