The Princess Elizabeth (22 May 1770 – 10 January 1840) was a member of the British Royal Family, the 7th child and 3rd daughter of George III of the United Kingdom. Her father was the reigning British monarch, George III, the eldest son of Frederick, Prince of Wales and Augusta of Saxe-Gotha. Her mother was Queen Charlotte (née Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz) .
Princess Sophia was born at Buckingham House, now Buckingham Palace, on 3 November 1777, she was the fifth daughter of King George III and Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. The infant princess was christened with the names Sophia Matilda on 1 December 1777 in the Great Council Chamber at St James's Palace by Frederick Cornwallis, Archbishop of Canterbury.
